Nine pops in the night and a tenth jar that never made a sound. In the morning the lid on that one flexes under your thumb, and the whole batch suddenly feels suspect. It is the most common thing that goes wrong in a canning session, and it happens to people who have been doing this for decades.
A failed seal is not a mystery. There is a short list of causes, they run in a rough order of likelihood, and most of them are free to fix. There is also a clock on your options, because what you can do with an unsealed jar depends heavily on whether you noticed within a day.

Check the Seal Properly First
Wait until the jars are completely cool, which usually means overnight, then remove the band and test. A sealed lid is curved down, does not flex when pressed in the center, and stays put when you lift the jar gently by the edge of the lid. A dull thud instead of a ring when tapped is a hint rather than proof.
Do not test warm jars and do not press lids down while they are cooling. A jar that has not finished cooling has not finished sealing, and pushing on the lid can break a vacuum that was about to form.
Take the Bands Off for Storage
Once the seal is confirmed, the band comes off. Leaving it on can hold a failed lid in place so it looks sealed, and it traps moisture that rusts the band to the jar. Storing without bands means a seal that fails in month four announces itself instead of hiding.
Work Through the Free Causes
Five things account for most failures and none of them costs anything to correct. Residue on the rim, a chipped jar, a band tightened wrong, wrong headspace, and a process that was interrupted. Go through them in that order before you conclude the lids are at fault.
1. The Rim
Wipe every rim with a clean damp cloth before the lid goes on, and do it after filling rather than before, because filling is what puts food on the glass. Sticky products need a cloth dipped in hot water, and vinegar helps on greasy ones. Then run a fingertip round the rim and feel for a nick. A chip too small to see reliably prevents a seal, and that jar should be retired to dry storage.
2. The Band
Fingertip tight means turned down by hand until you feel resistance, and then stopped. A band cranked hard stops air escaping during the process, which is the air that has to leave for a vacuum to form. A band left loose lets water into the jar. Nobody gets a feel for this from reading it, so err on the light side.
3. Headspace and Process

Then check the process itself: water an inch over the jars for the full boiling time, or the correct pressure held without dropping in a pressure canner.
When the Lids Are Genuinely the Problem
Flat lids are single use in canning. The sealing compound is compressed once, and a used lid will not compress the same way again, which is the most common reason a jar that seemed fine on the counter pops open in the pantry three weeks later. Reusable systems exist and have their own instructions, but standard flats do not get a second run.
Buy lids in bulk in the size you actually use, and store them flat and dry rather than loose in a drawer where the compound gets dented. A season’s worth costs little and a failed batch costs a lot more.
Handling Jars Without Rocking Them
Jars should come out of the canner upright and go straight onto a towel with space between them. Tipping a hot jar washes food up onto the sealing surface, and setting a hot jar on a cold counter is a thermal shock that cracks glass. A proper jar lifter grips the neck and keeps the jar level, which is the whole reason it is shaped that way.
What to Do With an Unsealed Jar
Within twenty four hours of processing you have three options. Reprocess the contents in a clean jar with a new lid, using a tested hot pack process for that food. Refrigerate the jar and use it within about a week. Or freeze it, adjusting the headspace upward so the contents have room to expand.
Reprocessing costs quality, so extension guidance often points to refrigerating or freezing as the better answer for one or two jars. Past the twenty four hour window, the food has been at room temperature in an unsealed container and reprocessing is no longer appropriate.

Jars That Broke Instead
Breakage during processing is a separate failure with three usual causes: a jar sitting directly on the canner base, a big temperature difference between the jar and the water, and old jars with hairline damage. Keep hot food in hot jars and cold in cold, and never let glass touch the metal bottom.
